Emergency preparedness tips for the pet owner
You never know when a natural disaster or emergency will pay an unfortunate and
unexpected visit. Emergencies come in many forms, and each type requires
different measures to keep your pets safe. The best thing you can do for
yourself and your pets is to be prepared.
While HomeAgain members have access to dozens of articles and tips regarding
emergency preparedness, here are a few simple tips to get you started.
Get a rescue alert sticker. This easy-to-use sticker, listing
vital information such as the number of pets in the household and your
veterinarian's phone number, will let people know that pets are inside your
home. Make sure it is visible to rescue workers.
Compile emergency supplies and traveling kits. Keep an
Evac-Pack and supplies handy for your pets. Make sure that everyone in the
family knows where it is. Keep items such as three to seven days worth of food,
an extra leash, bottled water, and a blanket in or near your pack.
Make sure your pet is identifiable. The ASPCA recommends
microchipping your pet as the most permanent form of identification. Ask your
veterinarian about the HomeAgain microchip.
